12 Ways To Have Fun On A Shoestring Budget

Ya gotta have money to enjoy life, right? Well, yes – and no. Having cash to spend can open up a lot of possibilities in terms of our leisure time pursuits. However, creating a fun and enjoyable life doesn’t necessarily require lots of the green stuff.

Following are some suggestions for getting maximum pleasure out of life -- with minimal expense:Go on a hunting expedition – to your local library. Check out videos, books, CDs and audiotapes that really grab your interest. You’d be surprised how many entertaining, informative and interesting resources your library has -- for little or no cost.

Explore your town, city or neighborhood by foot or bike. Make it a game to really get to know the area you live in by spending time in it – outside of your car. History, natural features, and architecture are just some aspects of your surroundings you can have fun learning more about.

Co-create a special meal with a friend, spouse or partner. Designate a theme for the event, and consider including foods and beverages you might not normally allow yourself to have or that you’ve never tried. You’ll have more fun and spend less than if you had gone to a restaurant.

Take a hike in nature. As you walk, practice being present to and appreciating the beauty that surrounds you. Nature’s sights, sounds and smells – in addition to the exercise - will relax and rejuvenate you.

Go for a drive to explore a nearby town, city, or geographic or historical site you’ve never been to. Make sure to pack water and food to avoid shelling out lots of moolah for ‘road food’.

Subscribe to and read a periodical you think you’d really enjoy, but have never given yourself permission to have. Many subscriptions are in the $10-$20/year range. That’s a lot of interesting reading for little money!

Seek out and attend no/low cost talks and workshops on topics that intrigue you. You can usually find such events in your local newspaper’s Calendar of Events.

Go shopping ‘just for the fun of it’. Take no money, and have fun appreciating and enjoying things without being attached to the ‘I have to have that’ belief.

Purchase and care for house or garden plants. This can be not only satisfying and relaxing, but will also help you reestablish your primal connection to the earth and life.

Take a moment to play with your pet or a young child (or your neighbor’s!). Invariably you’ll come away with more lightness and joy in your heart.

Exercise. But make it enjoyable. Try something different from what you’d typically do. Remember – exercise is supposed to enliven - not drain - us.

Invite friends over for a gathering. Make it a potluck (for something different, try doing a Sunday brunch or afternoon tea). Ask your friends to bring music, poetry, or inspirations to share with the group.
