What's in a Garage?

Elsa Jewett
All in Good Order
Would a garage by any other name still be as messy? Probably, but a garage has an important function in our lives. It houses our cars, bicycles, lawn mowers, camping gear, tools, and all our gigots and gadgets.

But, what also seems to end up in our garage are things we’ve bought or been given that we think we might use one day, things we know we’ll never use but can’t seem to part with, and things that are broken that we might fix some day.

A garage, like any other room of our home, represents a part of our lives. Whether it is on the left side, right side, bottom side, wrong side, or even detached, there is a connection between ourselves and our garage.

Garages, rooms, or crawl spaces underneath our home represent our past. It is always interesting to see the things that end up in that space. Have you taken a look lately?

There’s that floor lamp from your Great Aunt Edna that you would put in the living room whenever she visited but she hasn’t been by in two years. There’s that vacuum cleaner that just needs a new bag, a new belt, and a new motor. It might make a good looking floor lamp with a few minor modifications. Then there’s that stack of books next to that stack of magazines that might make a good bonfire for your next camping trip.

They are all out of sight, tucked away under the house, but they are still in our lives. Sometimes those things that have served us so well, or maybe not so well, can be the hardest things to let go of.

Material things have a certain amount of time to be in our lives. When they are not serving us anymore they can be a detriment, pulling our energy down. I often hear people say, “I never go down there so why is that stuff a problem?” That stuff can actually impair us from moving forward.

If you want to move forward, but feel as though you have been stuck, take a look in your basement or garage and see what might be holding you down. You might be surprised to see what is down there.

Action Tip: Begin organizing your garage by sorting things into like piles. In this way you can easily see how many of each item you have and can determine what is no longer needed.
