Tips for Mom - Squeezing in Time to Nurture Yourself

The nicer we are to ourselves, the nicer we are to others. And it doesn’t have to take all day using these two organizing tricks– using small chunks of time, and multi-tasking. When Mama is happy, everybody else can be happy too.
Drink your water, at least eight glasses a day. Stash bottled water in your car and desk. Place a glass by the kitchen and bathroom sinks, drinking up each time you use those areas.
Move. Multi-task by using the treadmill while enjoying a favorite TV show or book. Do a few minutes of crunchies during commercial breaks. Do leg lifts during a morning scripture study.
Read. Set a small CD player in the kitchen and listen to uplifting books on tape while you clean, cook, fold laundry, or commute.
Find some quiet time. Use the kids’ nap time to recharge yourself, not clean the house. Take the phone off the hook, and don’t answer the door.
Take a day off. After getting your kids ready for the day, do whatever you feel like the rest of the day, whether you feel like mopping, snuggling up with a good book or sappy film, or meeting a friend at McDonald’s play land. Or designate one evening a week or month where your husband puts the kids to bed and you have the night off to relax or pursue a hobby.
Reconnect with a favorite friend. Meet once a month for an evening of scrapbooking, or start a weekly playgroup at the park.
Play and laugh together. Dance in the kitchen while doing the dishes –with your husband, the kids, or all together. Let your hair down and giggle.
Write in a gratitude journal. At bedtime write five things you’re grateful for that day. This can lift your spirit and help you become a glass-half-full person.
Listen to some uplifting music every day. Play classical or other inspiring music while washing dishes, doing laundry, or eating dinner to set a calm mood in the home.
Nurture your relationship with God. Try a bedtime family devotional. Sing a song together, say a family prayer, and take turns reading a few verses of scripture. It’s a great bonding time and a peaceful way to end your day.
Remember our two tricks--using small chunks of time, and multi-tasking. Squeeze in a little bit every day, and do it guilt-free. Not only will Mama be happier, the rest of the family will be happier too.
